When done correctly, dental implants look just as good if not better than real teeth. However, that doesn’t mean that caring for dental implants is the same as caring for teeth. Here are a few tips for taking care of your dental implants that can help you keep your implants looking like new for years to come.
Avoid Hot Food and Drink
Luckily, dental implants are incredibly resilient, meaning you can basically chew and eat as normal. However, one thing you should avoid is very hot beverages. These can heat up the metal screws that hold your implants in place, which could then burn surrounding tissues.
Also, avoid eating or drinking hot and cold foods and beverages together. The combination of heat and cold can cause the porcelain of your implants to contract and expand rapidly, increasing the chance of a crack or chip.

Stay Away From Vibrating Toothbrushes
While vibrating toothbrushes are a great tool for getting a thorough clean, they shouldn’t be paired with dental implants. The slight vibrations of the toothbrush can actually loosen the implant screws in your gums. Because the crown part of the implant is cemented on top of this screw, there’s really no way to tighten things back up without taking out the entire implant and replacing it.
Brush on a Regular Basis
Just because dental implants can’t get cavities doesn’t mean you can skip brushing them. Brushing twice a day and flossing and rinsing once a day is extremely important for maintaining healthy gums. Having a strong gumline is what hold the implants in place.
However, be sure to use caution when flossing your implants. If you floss in the wrong spot, you could break the seal of the implant against your gum, which would allow bacteria to go inside your gums and into your jawbone. To avoid this, you can start using a water pick instead.
You probably already know that smoking is bad for your health. However, it is also bad for your dental implants. This is because nicotine is released into the mouth whenever you inhale. This nicotine reduces blood flow to the gum tissues, which deprives them of the necessary nutrients they need to stay in good health and hold the implant.
Even worse, smoking can promote the growth of bacteria, which could lead to gingivitis or other mouth diseases.
Schedule Regular Dental Cleanings
Even if you brush your teeth and implants regularly, you will still need to visit your dentist for regular cleanings. The ADA recommends scheduling an appointment at least every six months to check and make sure that everything in your mouth is functioning and healthy. This way, if there are any problems with your implants, they can be caught early on before they lead to irreparable damage.
