5 Things You Can Do While Brushing Your Teeth

Experts agree that you should spend around two minutes brushing your teeth. This is an adequate amount of time for completely cleansing the surface of the top and bottom rows. However, just standing around in the bathroom for two minutes can get really boring. Luckily, there are plenty of things you can do to make your two-minute session a lot more productive and entertaining.

Listen to a Podcast

If you haven’t gotten on the podcast bandwagon, you’re missing out. Recurring shows like This American Life and limited series like Serial swept the nation and became viral sensations. However, both of these shows have run-times that go a little longer than a two-minute teeth brushing session. Instead, try playing a shorter podcast that lasts closer to two minutes. You have plenty of options, including the Science Underground podcast for information on scientific advancements, Slate’s Daily Feed or BBC Minute for some of the world’s leading headlines, or the 2 Minute Takeaway Podcast for those looking for professional motivation.

Do Some Exercise

High-intensity interval training is all the rage right now. Unfortunately, it’s probably not safe to engage in a turbo workout while your mouth is covered in toothpaste. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t get a few stretches and light-intensity exercises in while brushing. For example, squatting in place is a great way to loosen up in the morning and work on toning your bottom and thighs. You can also try side-to-side lunges, high knees, or any other leg exercise that doesn’t involve moving your upper body too much. After a few weeks, you might notice more muscle tone or fat loss.

Treat Your Skin

While your teeth are getting sparkling clean, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to pamper the rest of your body. One good way to do this is to apply a two-minute facial mask. Simply clean your face, apply the mask, brush your teeth, and wash it off. Not only will you prevent cavities, but you’ll have glowing skin that will make you look years younger.

Practice Meditation

If you have a chaotic lifestyle, brushing your teeth in the morning and at night could be one of the few times you have alone. Take those few minutes in the bathroom and put them to good use by reflecting on yourself and the day ahead or behind you. Think about the things you need to do, the things you’ve already done, and what you want to accomplish for the day. Better yet, try making your mind a blank slate and pushing away all tension and stray thoughts. Not only will your teeth be cleaner than ever, but so will your mind and spirit.

Catch Up on New Music

Has your favorite artist released a new CD that you haven’t had time to listen to? Treat yourself every morning by listening to a new song while brushing your teeth. Not only will the music be the perfect time for your brushing session, but it will also help you wake up as you groove along.

By adding these tricks to your oral hygiene routine, you’ll have much more fun when it comes time to clean your mouth.
