Oh my goodness it’s almost Thanksgiving! A day to give thanks and eat food. And then eat some more food, before we go to sleep dreaming about that food. I’m not trying to rain on your parade, but someone needs to speak for your teeth. All that food might seem like a really good thing, but there’s a good chance your teeth will be suffering through the holiday. Here are a few things you should at lead try to avoid eating on Thanksgiving, for the sake of your teeth.
- Carbonated or Sugary Drinks – No brainer. A dentist’s grudge against sugary beverages is not something we try to hide. Don’t drink them. Not only can soda increase your risk of osteoporosis. It's also a leading cause of tooth decay. Water or milk are fantastic choices to go with your Thanksgiving meal. Make the right choice. Your teeth will thank you by staying in your head longer.
- Sticky Treats – Ooh, the dessert table! Looks great, doesn’t it? Just try to shy away from the real sticky or sugary desserts. Which might be… all of them. If you can’t say no, just remember to at least rinse with water soon after eating, and brush and floss like your dentist is watching when you get home at night.
- All Day Snacks – Nuts, Chips, whatever is out on the coffee table. If you want to indulge, do it all at once rather than in nibbles all day long. Your teeth need a break from time to time. They like to have some alone time with saliva, so they can stay refreshed. Show them the respect they deserve by not snacking constantly.
- Cranberry Sauce – Cranberries are very acidic, which makes them tough on teeth, and also tough on your stomach, especially if you suffer from acid reflux. Some people wait all year for their sweet sweet cranberry sauce, I’m just saying maybe they should keep waiting.
My hope is that after reading this, you just become a little more conscious of how Thanksgiving can affect your teeth, and maybe you’ll change your habits just a bit.
