The Future of Brushing? This New Toothbrush Tracks Your Brushing Habits

As technology continues to spread throughout the world, it should come as no surprise that researchers are making new advancements in oral care. While the standard toothbrush has been working fine, that hasn’t stopped Oral-B from creating a brand new gadget that will revolutionize the way you brush your teeth. With the Oral-B Genius toothbrush, you’ll never be able to skimp on brushing your teeth again. That’s because this new toothbrush tracks your brushing habits.

Technology to See Where and How Long You’re Brushing

Estimates show that 80 percent of people don’t spend enough time brushing certain parts of their mouth, while 60 percent of people don’t brush their back molars at all. Just thinking about all the bad bacteria and plaque these people leave behind in their mouths is cringe-worthy. Luckily, the Oral-B Genius prevents this from happening by monitoring how you’re brushing in real-time.

By pairing your toothbrush with your phone and then mounting it in front of you with a suction cup, you’ll be able to get an accurate reading of just how long you’re brushing and which areas you missed. The toothbrush runs a video-recognition algorithm on your phone which monitors your behaviors while brushing. Then, this data is combined with information from motion and acceleration sensors located on the toothbrush. The end result? A personalized report showing which areas you might have skimped on.

The report alerts you when you’ve been using too much pressure in an effort to prevent damage to your teeth. There’s also a timer that goes off after two minutes, which is the ideal length of time to brush for.

Features to Help Your Mouth Get Cleaner than Ever

The time, pressure, and motion sensors aren’t the only features on this sophisticated toothbrush. The Oral-B Genius also comes with different brushing modes to help guide you through different processes. For example, you can change the settings to whitening mode, tongue cleaner, massage mode, deep clean, daily clean, and sensitive mouth. Each program will customize the algorithm to better guide you in your brushing.

The toothbrush also comes with a rounded brush head that provides a more thorough clean to each individual tooth. Other accessories include a travel case, smartphone holder, and SmartRing, a lighting system that lets you customize the color of your brush.

The Future of Brushing Is Bright

If that’s not enough features for you, there’s a chance there will be even more in the near future. Oral-B is working with various third-party app developers to try and make the toothbrush even fancier. The company is hoping to eventually add on brushing games for kids or rewards programs where brushing on a scheduled routine can earn you a bonus prize.

If using this kind of technology in your mouth is a bit frightening, that’s ok. It’s important to be comfortable with the type of brush you’re using. However, the upside of using a device like this is that it could greatly lower your chances of having cavities or gingivitis. If this toothbrush is well received, it will be interesting to see just where dental technology heads next.
