How Does CEREC Technology Work
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. It is CAD/CAM technology that allows us to create restorations in our own office on the day of your appointment instead of having to send out measurements to a third-party laboratory.
During the procedure also known as “Smile in a Day”, Dr. Russell Mann scans your teeth, preps them for restoration, creates the restoration, and adjusts it in your mouth. You will leave our office with a beautiful new restoration, and you don’t have to worry about dealing with a temporary or fitting multiple appointments into your busy schedule.
With CEREC, Dr. Mann can customize every part of your dental prosthetic, from the dental implant all the way to the crown that caps it.
Difference between CEREC and Traditional Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are a dental prosthetic that covers the entire surface of your tooth. They help stabilize your tooth and provide extra protection, and they blend naturally with your existing teeth. Traditional crowns involve “prepping” the tooth so that the crown can fit perfectly, this may involve shaving some of the surfaces of the tooth. Typically, it can take up to two weeks to wait for the dental crown to be crafted at a dental lab, and a temporary crown is placed on site for you to wear in the meantime. At your second visit with your dentist, your permanent crown is bonded to your tooth.
CEREC differs by scanning your tooth using special computer software and foregoing the impressions. The milling machine takes the 3D image and fabricates a ceramic dental crown while you wait. No need to wait two weeks to return, and no temporary crowns are necessary.
Benefits of Choosing CEREC
CEREC technology has been a significant breakthrough in digital dentistry. It has been commonplace for dentists to send out for all their permanent restorations. Crowns, veneers, onlays, and overlays are typically prepared at a lab far away from the dentist’s office and takes weeks to complete. Patients are sent home with a temporary and would set an appointment for when their permanent restoration arrived.
Dr. Mann uses CEREC technology to produce a 3-D image of the tooth to be restored. Planning with this level of accuracy results in a precision fit for your new crown or veneer. When it’s perfected, the milling machine creates the restoration right here in our office. It is finished and fired in an oven before it is placed permanently in your mouth. The whole process takes a few hours, and you don’t have to worry about having a temporary or coming back for another appointment weeks away.
Aside from their convenience, CEREC crowns designed at Mann Family Dental look and feel like your natural teeth. Some crowns, like porcelain fused to metal, show a dark line around the gums. But CEREC crowns are fabricated from metal-free porcelain to benefit your oral health and blend seamlessly with your smile. CEREC’s advanced digital impressions allow Dr. Mann to create impressions without the use of an impression tray.
CEREC: Pros and Cons
Imagine that you just booked a flight to the vacation of your dreams when you accidentally bite into something hard and you realized that your veneer is now cracked. For many people, this might mean waiting a few weeks to see their dentist and waiting even longer for a restoration. With CEREC, you have the opportunity to see Dr. Mann the same day and have your chipped tooth fixed to look brand new.
Since CEREC may not be a well-known term, you may be wondering what the pros and cons are to this dental procedure. Below are a few common things to consider:
- The dental procedure can take around 2 hours
- Impressions and measurements are taken quickly and efficiently
- Customized crowns and veneers mean your prosthetic fits perfectly
- CEREC prosthetics look and feel like your natural tooth
- With proper care and maintenance, you can enjoy your CEREC prosthetic for decades
- You don’t have to wear a temporary prosthetic while you wait for the permanent one to be created
- The ceramic used by CEREC may not be as strong as porcelain
- The CEREC camera may not be able to view if your tooth’s fracture extends below the gumline
Is CEREC Right for You?
Anyone who needs a dental restoration is a good candidate for CEREC.
